Fritz Maytag Sells Anchor Brewery

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

I received a terrifying text from my girlfriend today reading, “Anchor Brewery was sold today!” I nearly fell out of my chair. I immediately looked it up on my trusty new iPhone, not that I didn’t trust her, I just wanted more information like any true beergeek would. Sure enough, today Anchor Brewery was sold.

Fritz Maytag, who is basically the reason we are enjoying craft beer to this day, bought the Anchor Brewery in 1965 and has now sold Anchor Brewery to The Griffin Group who is promptly renaming it to Anchor Breweries & Distillers, LLC.

While it’s hard news to hear, I’ve gotta put my faith in the man who started the craft beer revolution’s judgment. I’ve got to wonder, however, if our pending tour reservations for our California vacation will be affected. I sure hope not. I’ve wanted to visit this craft beer mecca for some time.

Chameleon Brewing Release Party

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

“Chameleon Brewing, dedicated to creating innovative craft beers true to the American spirit, is a new brewery started by Randy Sprecher, founder of Sprecher Brewery. Crafted to please and tease a wide variety of palates, Chameleon beers are light in body, yet full of complex flavors and aromas.”

Chameleon Brewing is hosting a release party for their beers, Hop On Top, Fire Light, and Witty tomorrow, April 28th, at Bayshore Mall in Glendale, WI from 5:30-8:30. Here is what they have to say on their website calendar:

“Come join us for complimentary beer and food samples as we celebrate the launch of Chameleon Brewing! The event will be held at the rotunda, next to Bar Louie, at Bayshore Mall.”

You can find there website here: http://chameleonbrewing.com/index.php

I’ll be there for a short time with my cousin to sample Chameleon’s beers and hopefully score some to review for a BeerFM podcast.

Hope to see you there!

Dark Lord Day Parking

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Three Floyd’s has just tweeted about the parking situation for Dark Lord Day and after Sweem and I went there on our way back from Founders Black Party, the parking is gonna be a bit more than a situation. The brewery is located in an industrial park and a lot of people are going to be walking for a while to get there:

I personally might consider parking up the road and taking a cab in to bypass the craziness of it all. It’s also supposed to rain all weekend which won’t help either. But it all adds to the fun of it!

I just read on Surlys blog they have halted shipping of all beer. Apparently the demand is just too high to keep up. Check out the full story here.

Dark Lord Day is upon us.

Friday, April 16th, 2010
So as I write this we are still a little over a week away from Dark Lord Day. April 24th to be exact. The Golden tickets have started show up in the mail and the excitement is almost more than I care to divulge. The quintessential beer geek pilgrimage is sure to be one of the pinnacles in my beer centric life. Although I’ve never been to DLD I have heard many a beer geek spin tales of table after table of white whales and other top rated beers to be consumed at your leisure. Friendly beer enthusiasts pouring growlers of ale into any passerby empty mug. Hour after hour of death metal brutally raping your ear pussy. This on top of the fact that bottles of the holy grail known as Dark Lord can be purchased make me quiver with anticipation.
All this fun and excitement will surely be grandiose. However the true fun of the event will be spending the weekend with my friends and celebrating the unity we share know as beer geeks. I imagine as in the past I will wake up Monday morning after the weekend with a head ache from the beer. Yet this will not be my only pain. My face, my stomach and my voice will all have suffered a similar fate from all the laughing and yelling that will take place the entire time we are together. These are some of the best guys you could ever ask to be friends with. There is so much camaraderie you would think we grew up together. On the contrary some of them I’ve only met through email.  Beer culture just seems to breed nice people. This is the true meaning of the event to me. In the end the beer will be drank and traded away but these guys will always be around to crack another brew with me.
So if you haven’t made your plans yet to come down to Munster I strongly suggest you make the trip. You may just walk away with a bottle of Dark Lord and a new best friend.

Beer lovers everywhere mourn the loss of a great pioneering brewer/author Greg Noonan, the founder of the Vermont Pub & Brewery.

Beer lovers in Wisconsin become outraged at the proposed $9 tax hike on each barrel produced by craft breweries in Wisconsin. Listen to the episode to hear how to oppose this bill. Here is a list of Committee of Public Safety members email addresses for you:
