Take a listen to this podcast (yeah, we still do podcasts!) review of Hinterland‘s Oktoberfest.
Maybe, just maybe, we might have one of the greatest state-side Oktoberfest beers in the nation coming from this state!

A must-read for any beer drinker and tree-hugger, this comes from my friend and Sierra Nevada Area Manager Larry:
Hello Sierra Nevada Partners and Distributors,
In advance of the April 1st kick-off of our Unplug program (Earth Day is Thursday April 22nd), we’ve updated the page at http://www.sierranevada.com/Unplug.html.
With this program, we are debuting a very cool new feature on our website. We now are able to show real-time figures from our solar array and fuel cells!
On the Unplug page is a widget that has three dials; one shows how much energy the solar panels are generating, one shows how much energy the fuel cells are generating, and the last shows the total percentage of our energy we are generating on-site. When the percentage dial shows over 100%, we are generating more energy than we currently need, and are selling energy back to the grid. The fact that we generate a large portion of our energy ON-SITE (over 80% last year!) is an important and unique distinction for us. Beneath the dials is a small window that shows the current weather conditions in Chico and whether or not it’s day or night here.
Also attached updated sell sheet for the program Pos and details. The New Pale Ale 6-pack carriers with the Unplug logo began shipping the week of 3/8 from Chico; so look for them to begin showing up in your market this month.
We Invite you to check out the site and share the information.
If you have any questions, let us know.

So, a little while ago I posed the question to everyone, “What should beer should I have for my 1,000th beer review?”. Well, a few people offered up great suggestions but just not enough to really formulate a list, let alone have the BeerFM people vote on it. Plus, I was given an offer I couldn’t refuse.
While browsing Binny’s in Schaumburg, IL this holiday weekend I looked at two beers I really wanted but wasn’t ready to drop coin on (coincidentally I bought The Bruery Coton for about $22 which was more expensive than both the other choices). My wonderful and supportive girlfriend Trish said, “I’ll get one of them for you to review for your 1,000th review.”
So, without further adieu, I’ll be having Lost Abbey’s Bourbon Barrel-aged Angel’s Share. It’s a beer I’ve heard much about and I’m certainly excited to try. When the moment happens, you all will be the first to see what I think.
Cheers and thanks for all the support!

As one of Wisconsin’s premier Beer Festivals, it’s no wonder the Great Lakes Brew Fest is on it’s seventh year! And this year marks a special change in the GLBF. This year will feature two days of GLBF rather than one!
Friday kicks off the fest with a celebration of Milwaukee Beer Week and features only Wisconsin Brewers. 35 of them to be exact. With more than 100 brews and food available to purchase, it’ll be a beautiful time watching a fireworks display over Lake Michigan. After that you may want to get your Gatorade and sleep on cause Saturday features even more beer-y goodness.
More than 90 American craft brewers will be serving up more than 250 different beers, food available for purchase, and Reggae and Ska music to compliment this years’ theme: Dreadlocks -N- Hops. Come in your dreadlocks and tie-dye to have a chance at winning a prize for being the best dressed! Saturday also features Homebrew Island, a special section of GLBF dedicated to homebrew clubs featuring their own concoctions.
A word to the wise though; tickets go fast. It’s been sold out the last 4 years running AND the hotels are booked solid months in advance. I’ve already saved mine; the Radisson within walking distance. A very short walking distance. I suggest you do the same!
For more information on this event visit the Great Lakes Brew Fest website.
Congratulations go out to Mr. Damon Hill, BeerFM’s very own Beer Geek of the Month. He’s helped spread the BeerFM word to others, participated on the website and Facebook, and he’s just an awesome guy all-around. His prize is yet to be determined but will surely be something awesome!
Raise a pint and join me in saying thanks to Damon!

If you’ve seen the recent BeerFM promotions, Ray’s has begun their monthly beer tastings in their new tasting and education room. I was able to attend the first one on July 1st which featured Lakefront Brewery president Russ Klisch, no stranger to me. Despite the fact we talk on a consistent basis, I always learn something new from him. This Ray’s event was no different.
We entered the room and people began to flood in shortly after. Each chair at every table had a Lakefront placemat with six four ounce plastic cups on it, all numbered on the printed paper. Russ then walked around putting three different types of malts on each table. No stranger to homebrewing, I recognized them as Pale, Caramel, and a variety of Chocolate malt. The session begun with a quick overview of Lakefront and Russ which moved into the tasting portion. Starting with Lakefront’s White, a Belgian-style Witbier. From there we moved to the Klisch Pilsner, Local Acre, Fixed Gear and Bridge Burner side-by-side, the brand new True Evel, and finished with a surprise tasting of Rosie, their newly released sour beer.
Each beer was accompanied by a little blurb on the style as well as Lakefront’s/ Russ’ take on it. Some of my favorite parts of the tasting included news from Russ that Lakefront will be expanding their Brettanomyces/ aged beer offering as well as adding a beer series titled “My Turn” to their line up.
My Turn will feature a beer from each full-time employee at the brewery (around 19 or so). They’ll have complete control over the whole batch, making it exactly like they want. These beers will be on a three-month rotation so new ones will be available pretty regularly. Russ also stated that he’s in the works of trying to round up every brewery in Wisconsin to brew a wet-hopped beer that will all be released on the exact same day. It seems to be in early stages so far but he seemed very optimistic about it.
Lastly, the thing I found most interesting is that while Russ talked about Local Acre, their Imperial Pilsner beer brewed with all-Wisconsin ingredients, he talked about the hop farms in Wisconsin. Apparently, in the 1800s Sauk County was the highest hop producing county in America! Right now Lakefront gets hops from both Mazomanie, located by Madison and Hortonville, up by Green Bay.
All-in-all it was an incredibly informational session with lots to learn for the new beer lover up to the experienced homebrewer. I enjoyed this event thoroughly and talking to Russ is always a pleasure, as well as event organizer John who I must thank for the event.
If it sounds like something up your alley, Ray’s will be hosting Stone Brewing Company on Wednesday, July 28th. I’m excited for that and I hope to see you there!
Working with a number of craft breweries, sponsors, and civic groups coming together, Milwaukee will host its first annual 2010 Milwaukee Brewfest on Saturday, July 31st. Milwaukee Brewfest will be held at the Old Coast Guard Pavilion Park on Milwaukee’s Eastside. This prime location offers a beautiful view of Lake Michigan and McKinley Marinan not to mention ample parking.
In addition to unlimited sampling of over 170 craft beers and micro brews from around the world, there will also be a number of other on-site activities:
The ticketed event will run from 3PM – 7PM, with VIP ticket holders allowed in at 2PM to sample limited edition and rare brews. Only 2000 tickets will be sold with advance purchase available online and at select retailer locations prior to the event. General admission tickets will be $40, with VIP Tickets will be sold for $55.
Join BeerFM at Milwaukee Brewfest to make it an event to remember and one to return to, year after year!
Ray’s Wine & Spirits is kicking off their first-ever beer tasting in the new tap room this Thursday, July 1st, at 6:30 PM with Lakefront president and all-around nice guy Russ Klisch (how can you say no to a face like that?)! Come on out to Ray’s Tasting Room and Education Center to sample some of Lakefront’s newer beers, Fixed Gear and Bridge Burner as well as classics like their Klisch Pilsner and White! Not only will you have a chance to sample beer with Russ himself but he’ll be providing a segment on current craft beer trends as well as sharing insight on the way the beer industry is changing!
The cost is only $10 a ticket and seats are limited so head to http://www.rayswine.com/Tasting-Room.asp to get your ticket now! If you haven’t had any Lakefront beer yet, or just need to restock your current supply, Ray’s will have the Lakefront beers on special to purchase!
Beerwolf and I will be there and we hope to see you, too!
